THOUSANDS REDISCOVER MASTER ANTIOXIDANT GLUTATHIONE

Millions of times more powerful than Vitamin C or any exotic juice, glutathione is our bodies' own natural antioxidant. Each and every cell in our bodies produces it, from our brain cells, to the cells in our muscles and joints. As we get older, our bodies' glutathione level drops, resulting in, among other things, sickness, chronic pain, loss of memory, and fatigue. We don't heal as quickly and it takes more time to recover from exercise and other necessary stresses that we bring upon ourselves. It's no secret. It happens to us all. The question is, "What can be done about it?"

Many have sought to replenish natural antioxidants with exotic juices such as fermented noni, mangosteen, acai, and goji berries. These people are often found going from one super-food to the next trying to find the one that will have the greatest effect on the body, when in actuality, what really needs to be accomplished is to find a way to raise the level of the body's own natural antioxidant, glutathione.

How glutathione level be increased?

Modern day thought would dictate, "That's easy. Just swallow a glutathione-rich supplement." As easy as it sounds, this won't do much, if anything. Most of the raw glutathione you ingest would get destroyed in the stomach. Furthermore, the parts that make it into the blood stream would just float around in your blood doing nothing. Glutathione is too large to cross through the cell membrane to the inside of the cell where it needs to be. It would be like trying to shove an orange through a keyhole, it just doesn't fit.

Introducing the right combination of the building blocks into the cells, where it can be produced is the key to raising the body's own natural antioxidant level. Some of these components include: L Glutamine, N-Acetyl Cystene, and Alpha Lipoic Acid. The right combination of these, and other antioxidants, has been shown to raise these levels even in HIV and cancer patients. There are plenty of articles and medical journals that outline this research.

In conclusion, glutathione is the body's own natural antioxidant. It is that antioxidant that our bodies are constantly trying to rebuild and replace. When we raise the level of our body's own natural antioxidant, it is like discovering the fountain of youth because every cell in your body begins to function with renewed energy. The good foods can help to partially compensate for decreases in glutathione, but nothing can replace the body's own natural antioxidant, glutathione.

MaxGXL has been proven to increase glutathione levels up to 400%. The formula represented such a dramatic breakthrough that the U.S. Patent Office awarded it a composition patent, normally reserved for pharmaceutical drugs.

MaxGXL was developed by Dr. Robert Keller MD, MS, FACP who has been named as one of the 2000 Outstanding Scientists of the 21st Century and named by the Consumers Research Council as one of America's Top Physicians in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007 in the fields of Internal Medicine, Immunology, and Hematology.

A Drop of Olive Oil

One of the most well-known vegetable oils, which is obtained from the fruit of the Olive tree that is traditionally found in the Mediterranean Basin, has been used since ancient years in cooking, cosmetics, soaps, or even as a fuel of traditional oil lamps.

Described as the "Mediterranean Miracle" has been regarded one of the most healthful dietary oils due to its high content of monounsaturated fat-mainly Oleic acid-and polyphenols. According to numerous studies has tremendous positive health outcomes when daily included as part of a diet plan. In fact, the life expectancy rates of the countries around the Mediterranean Sea have been found to be greater in comparison to other countries that do not use olive oil as part of their daily diet plan.

Moreover, olive oil's ingredients, act as excellent prevention mechanisms for several life-threatening diseases, as the lower death rates from heart disease and certain cancers illustrate. Interestingly, this is particularly true of the native Greeks from the island of Crete. As a Cretan I can attest that the reputation of native Cretans drinking pure olive oil as a health improving practice is true; although in fact a very small amount is consumed. But apart from Cretans, as the Mediterranean diet has gained immense popularity, people deciding to incorporate olive oil into their daily diet plans have already begun to experience its beneficial results.

Since the fat that is included in the olive oil is in the form of monounsaturated fat, one of the major advantages of this fact is that olive oil can lower blood cholesterol, without reducing the health giving properties of HDL, or what is known as the good-type of cholesterol.

According to a recent study conducted in the Netherlands, researchers concluded that a high-fat olive oil diet was far superior to an ordinary low-fat diet in controlling levels of cholesterol, as their study findings portrayed; the cholesterol levels of the group studied while consuming olive oil was reduced by twenty points, whereas the control group that followed a low-fat diet plan saw an average reduction of seventeen points in cholesterol levels.

In addition, widespread studies have shown that consumption of oil can lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Tests have illustrated that, as little as three fluid ounces of olive oil a day can significantly lower blood pressure. In fact, olive oil can even lower the blood pressure of those people eating a high fat diet -high fat being defined as forty percent of calories coming from fat.

Finally, additional testing has concluded that oil can markedly lower blood glucose levels. This is especially crucial for those fighting diabetes, since they are advised to switch from a high carbohydrate and low fat diet to a high fat-around fifty percent of calories coming from fat-with most of that fat consumed coming from oil. This type of diet has very positive results for diabetics, as they can lower their blood sugar levels to such a degree that they require less insulin intake.

Finally, one should know that olive oil has antioxidant characteristics that help inhibit the process that produces LDL (the bad-type of cholesterol); this actually explains why olive oil considered a good heart attacks prevention ingredient. Furthermore, olive oil's antioxidant capabilities can also inhibit the development of certain types of cancers among many other heath problems.

Many support that it can even slow down the ageing process. For these and many more reasons your doctor will be able to describe, the benefits of incorporating olive oil into your daily diet cannot be over-stated.

Lycium Barbarum

Wolfberry, the common name for Lycium barbarum, is grown all over the world and is sought after for its medicinal and health properties. The plant produces red colored berries that are oblong in shape and very tender. Because of this property, the berry needs to be handled very carefully while plucking and is shaken from the vine to prevent it from spoiling. The picked fruit is preserved by a process of slow drying in the shade.

About the plant

Lycium barbarum plant grows to a height of 2.5 to 4 m, and flowers in the months of June to August. It can grow in sandy and clay soils that are nutritionally poor, and can grow in semi shade or no shade at all.

History

Wolfberry has a history of several centuries of use in China, where it is highly regarded for its medicinal, healing, and health enhancement properties. Among other things, wolfberry has been credited with anti-ageing properties and enhancing longevity. As if to bear this out, people living in some parts of China, where the plant is extensively grown and used, do enjoy a very high life expectancy and good general health.

Medicinal Use

The bark of Lycium barbarum tree has been a favorite medicine with the Traditional Chinese system of medicine. It is claimed that Lycium barbarum barks contain several valuable and important properties and are useful in various treatments and health improvement programs. These include improvement of the immune system, improvement of the eyesight, protection of the liver, improved blood circulation and increased sperm production. It has been used in traditional medical systems as a sedative and painkiller and to treat inflammation, skin irritation, anemia, cough and nose bleeds. There are also studies that suggest that it could be useful in the treatment of cancer, although more clinical trials would be needed to establish this claim. Lycium barbarum barks can be eaten raw or taken as a juice or with tea. Wolfberry can be taken on daily basis for general health.

Culinary Use

Wolfberries taste like raisins with a slight suggection of tomatos. They can be eaten raw or could be cooked. The Chinese make soups out of this berry and also brew it into a wine. The leaves are also consumed as a vegetable.

Nutritional Value

Wolfberries are considered as one of the richest natural sources of nutrients. They contain beta-carotone, Vitamin C, Vitamin B1 and B2, in addition to a number of other vitaamins, minerals, anitoxidants and amino acids.

Wolfberry contains most of the carrbohydrates, protein, fat and dietary fibers needed by the body. Hundred grams of the processed berry contains 370 calories.

Non medicinal uses

Lycium barbarum could also be used as a hedge and as a stabilizer for sandy banks since it has a good root system and grows on sandy soil.

Hazards

There are no known major hazards associated with Lycium barbarum. However, it belongs to a family that is known to often contain toxins, and therefore, it is preferable to exercise caution in its consumption. The use of its leaves is quite widespread and well documented, and so may not pose much risk. The unripe fruit might be toxic. However, the ripe fruit seems to be fit for consumption. Although there are no known cases of allergy to wolfberries, it is better that you consult your doctor if you are prone to allergy or have reason to suspect that you might be allergic.

Is It True That Antioxidants Are Anti Aging Agents?

There is so much information these days about anti aging and antioxidants. But what is all the hype about? What are antioxidants anyway, and what do they have to do with aging?

Antioxidants are substances that prevent or slow down oxidation. Oxidation is the process of unstable oxidized particles, peroxides or free radicals, being produced by the metabolism process, pollutants, food and smoking. This oxidation is a major contributor to the aging process. Antioxidants block these free radicals from ravaging tissues and cells, developing multiple health issues, and causing premature aging.

Antioxidants have different functions throughout the body. It is, therefore, important for optimum results to ensure that you consume a broad spectrum of these age defying agents. Their main function is to ensure that the hemoglobin in the cells binding the oxygen. Any lack, therefore, may cause the eventual rupture of the cell walls, causing the hemoglobin to leak out.

To explain how each of them is unique in their function and importance, here are some of the most powerful antioxidants:

Vitamin C: Its main functions are the maintenance of the adrenal glands and the brain, as well as the production of collagen and cellular energy. Even in small quantities, it protects the body from oxidative damage.

Vitamin E: Its job is to keep the body's fats from oxidization by free radicals. In other words, it will prevent these fats from turning into bad cholesterol, causing clogged arteries and cardiovascular disease. That, together with its skin healing properties, makes it a potent anti-aging agent.

Flavonoids, or bioflavonoids: These are potent immune boosters, fighting off viruses, carcinogens and allergens. They give plants their colorful hues and are mainly found in certain fruits, herbs and vegetables, such as green tea and citrus fruits.

Carotenoids, including beta-carotene and lycopene among others, produce the orange pigment in carrots and red in tomatoes. The beta-carotene in carrots is effective for maintaining and improving good eyesight, and tomatoes have prostate cancer fighting properties. Lutein is a carotenoid found in spinach, and is also great for the eyes as well as helping to prevent lung cancer.

There are several dozen carotenoids in the foods that you eat, mainly in fruit and vegetables, and most of these have antioxidant characteristics. Lycopene is considered the most potent kind.

CoQ10: is your body's energy production system, and contributes to vital activities, such as muscle contractions and protein production. It helps you fight fatigue, lose weight, and strengthen your immune system.

Turmeric: is used in treating Alzheimer's disease, memory problems, arthritis, indigestion and cancer.

The B vitamins: are eight water-soluble vitamins that are important for cell metabolism, and promote cell growth and division. They also maintain muscles and skin, and improve both the immune and nervous systems. Together, they help ward off stress, depression and cardiovascular disease.

Folic acid and folate: These are forms of the water-soluble Vitamin B9 found in leafy vegetables, peas, fortified cereal, sunflower seeds and liver. They are necessary for the production and maintenance of new cells, especially during childhood and pregnancy. Folate is required for DNA production, preventing anemia and cancer.

Alpha-lipoic acid: Its main function is to convert carbohydrates into energy. It helps fight diabetes, brain diseases, including Parkinson's and epilespy.

This list is far from complete, but it will give you an idea of how many antioxidants there are, why they are so important, and why you need to have so many different ones to prevent the onslaught of aging.

There is substantial scientific evidence that vitamins and antioxidants derived from natural sources are more readily absorbed and assimilated by the human body. In other words, compounds that have been chemically synthesized in the laboratory may act very differently inside the human body than those extracted from natural sources.

Colorful fruits, including pomegranate and blueberries, vegetables like carrots or tomatoes, and whole grains are good sources of natural antioxidants. Other common dietary sources of antioxidants include sweet potatoes, spinach, cantaloupe, and mangoes. Red wine, chocolate, green tea, olive oil, bee pollen and many grains are alternative sources as well.

The research is done; the verdict is out! You can now age gracefully and fitfully with a daily potent broad spectrum anti-aging antioxidant cocktail!

Are You One Of The One In A Hundred Who's Properly Nourished?

It was observed centuries ago that sailors deprived of fresh fruit and vegetables on long voyages became ill with scurvy. Now of course, not many of us today have to live on salt-preserved meat and dry, weevil infested biscuits, and no doubt our modern Western diets are usually sufficient to protect us against disease. But for how many of us do they provide truly optimal health?

Those unfortunate sailors of old were quickly restored to health when given foods rich in Vitamin C, and we're all well aware today of the crucial importance of including the full range of vitamins in our diets.

But what's less often appreciated is that the vital functions of these vitamins are inextricably bound up with those of the equally vital minerals we require. Senate Document 264 (74th US Congress, Second Session 1936) was unequivocal on the point: ".....vitamins control the body's appropriation of minerals, and in the absence of minerals they have no function to perform. Lacking vitamins, the system can make some use of minerals, but lacking minerals, vitamins are useless."

In fact human beings require around 60 different minerals for optimal health, and although it's true that many of these are present in our bodies only in minute amounts, it doesn't follow that these trace minerals are unimportant.

To give just one example - the ageing process within the body is to a great extent driven by the action of so-called free radicals. These are the unwanted but entirely natural by-products of normal metabolic processes in cells, but if left unchecked they will damage and even eventually destroy those same cells. Chief amongst the body's weapons against the free radicals are the potent anti-oxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione, and the manufacture of these enzymes within the body is highly dependent on the working together of an abundant supply of vitamins B and C with trace minerals manganese, copper and zinc.

But Senate Document 264 noted that 99% of Americans were deficient in necessary minerals and in the light of the continued intensification of farming methods it seems highly unlikely that the situation has improved in the intervening years. Indeed, the 1992 Earth Summit reported that mineral concentrations in US farm soils were 85% lower than those of a hundred years ago.

The figures for other wealthy Western nations are almost as alarming, and the problem doesn't just lie in the soil. The modern prevalence of highly refined grains, and the treatment of fruits and vegetables with preservatives, dyes, pesticides and even radiation is a proven disaster for vitamin and mineral retention in our food, as well as a significant toxic assault with which the human organism simply wasn't designed to cope.

Of course this crisis in the quality of our food should in no way prevent us from seeking to eat as healthily as possible, but as Senate Document 264 noted; we are no longer likely to be able to obtain all the nutrients we need from our food alone. In the case of minerals in particular, said the report, our stomachs are simply not big enough to accommodate all the fruits and vegetables we would need to eat, so depleted of nutrients have our foods become.

Many physicians nevertheless insist that a balanced and varied diet including all the main food groups should generally provide adequate nourishment. And in a sense of course they're right. In an ideal world if everybody ate three well balanced meals a day, including an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables, there might indeed be no need for supplementation.

But even orthodox medical opinion will often concede the validity of supplementation for those suffering from specific conditions - the use of iron in the treatment of anaemia is perhaps the best known example. So if supplements can be used as treatments for the ill, might they not also be used as a means of improving the health of those who while displaying no clinical symptoms are in sub-optimal health.

This is not to say that supplementation can offer any guarantee of health. But just as most of us are happy to pay relatively small sums for insurance against an extremely unlikely but potentially catastrophic loss, it's a question of weighing the odds and balancing the risks.

People tend to be influenced more by their personal experience than any amount of scientific research, and the millions who've taken the view that it's worth paying a little each day for this very inexpensive form of health insurance have made supplements a multi-billion dollar industry.

And it's never been simpler or more convenient to take a comprehensive mineral supplement. The days of the foul tasting, tough to swallow and absorb, "horse pills" may soon be coming to an end if, as advocates claim, as little as a fluid ounce of a modern liquid supplement may provide all your requirements and more.

The Power of Antioxidants

Our bodies are designed to take care of themselves. There are systems within it for providing nutrients and for excreting the toxins. Antioxidants play a major role in removing these toxins from our body. Since they are so important in ridding us of harmful waste, it is vital that we have some knowledge of what antioxidants are, how they work and what kinds of foods and dietary supplements can provide us with their health benefits.

Antioxidants are a group of enzymes, vitamins and minerals that work to protect our bodies from forming free radicals. Free radicals in the body are atoms or groups of atoms that cause cell damage which impairs the immune system. Free radicals may be formed in a number of different ways. They can be caused by any number of bodily functions even the process of breaking down fat cells into usable energy.

To better explain this, our bodies are similar to a car. Each needs the proper fuel to perform to its peak. But just like the engines in our cars, our bodies don't burn the fuel efficiently. This poor conversion results in exhaust fumes in our car and free radicals in our body.

Most commonly, the free radicals are missing an electron due to some metabolic process. The negative atom attempts to correct itself by pulling an electron from another cell. The damage begins at that point and a chain of cells pulling electrons from one another starts to form. As a result, this can lead to infections and degenerative diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. In addition, recent studies have shown that damage caused by free radicals may be a major factor in the aging process.

Other causes are cigarette smoke (even second-hand), overexposure to the sun, exposure to radiation as well as inhaling or ingesting any of the pollutants common in our air, water and food chain.

Luckily, our bodies have a built-in weapon against this enemy. Free radical scavengers, such as enzymes, are naturally produced in the body. They seek out and bond with the free radicals. This bonding neutralizes the destructive action that occurs in the cells.

However, with the increased levels of toxins that we are subjected to daily, the antioxidants that the body supplies may fall short of the demand. Therefore, we might consider changing our diet to increase certain foods and taking nutritional supplements that will provide additional antioxidants for the body to use.

As you have probably read in many popular magazines, vitamins A, C and E have been found to act as very good antioxidants. Foods that offer high levels of antioxidants are fruits and vegetables, particularly the yellow-green vegetables. Other herbs and supplements that serve as antioxidants are: Alpha-Lipoic Acid, Bilberry, Chokeberry, Elderberry, Coenzyme Q10, Cysteine, Glyconutrients, Ginkgo Biloba, Glutathione, Grape Seed Extract, Green Tea, Pine Bark Extract, Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins, Pycnogenol, Melatonin, Selenium, Magnesium, Superoxide Dismutase, Beta-Carotene and Zinc.

So what is Glutathione?

Simply put, glutathione (GSH) is the body's master antioxidant. It is a small protein produced naturally in our cells when certain required elements are present. It functions both as an antioxidant and an antitoxin and is a major defense system against illness and aging. Our glutathione level actually indicates our state of health and can predict longevity. Although there are more than 60,000 published papers on the beneficial effects of glutathione replacement, it is still largely ignored by mainstream medicine. . In the near future the importance of glutathione will be widely recognized because it has the ability to boost the immune system and fight off the damage of free radicals on the cells.

Modern research has shown that individuals who have low levels of glutathione are susceptible to chronic illness. Decreased levels of glutathione can be brought about by continual stress upon the immune system. As we now know, a lowered immune system can bring about illness and disease. This is a ferocious cycle. While you need glutathione for a productive immune system, a weakened immune system hampers the production of glutathione.

Glutathione has been shown to slow down the aging process, detoxify and improve liver function, strengthen the immune system, and reduce the chances of developing cancer.

Glutathione also works to help improve mental functions, increase energy, improve concentration, permit increased exercise, and improve heart and lung function - just to name a few. Find out more: http://goodhealth.mymaxgxl.com

Why Lipoic Acid Is Much More Than Just Another Anti-Oxidant

Lipoic acid, also known as alpha-lipoic acid or thioctic acid, is a vitamin like compound produced naturally by the body in very limited quantities, but which may also be obtained from various dietary sources.

The lipoic acid produced in the body is closely bound to certain proteins and is essential to work in harmony with the B complex vitamins for the release of energy from food. No symptoms have ever been attributed to a deficiency of this type of lipoic acid, suggesting that the body is always able to manufacture a sufficient supply for this purpose. Research has focussed, however, on the possible benefits of high dose supplementation with what is known as "free lipoic acid", which does not bind with proteins in the body.

Lipoic acid functions as an anti-oxidant, assisting in the destruction of the free radicals which may damage cell DNA and membranes. However, lipoic acid is found in tiny quantities when compared with other anti-oxidants such as vitamins C and E, and the enzyme, glutathione. Moreover, any increase in lipoic acid activity obtained through supplementation is likely to be short lived. The real anti-oxidant importance of lipoic acid, however, lies in its capacity to recharge and renew these other anti-oxidants, consequently enhancing their potency.

Lipoic acid has also been shown to stimulate the production of glutathione in the body, a particularly important consideration in the case of the elderly who commonly have difficulty synthesising this enzyme and are consequently more vulnerable to the free radical attack which may damage cells and ultimately contribute to degenerative disease.

Research has suggested that high doses of lipoic acid may assist individuals with type 2 (non-insulin dependent) diabetes by improving glucose regulation and reducing the resistance to insulin which is characteristic of this form of the disease. Doses of 600 mg per day and more have been shown to enhance the action of insulin in type 2 diabetic individuals by as much as 25% after four weeks. It is much less clear, however, whether such courses of treatment will maintain similar benefits in the longer term.

There are also indications that lipoic acid may be effective in the alleviation of the pain and weakness commonly suffered by diabetic individuals as a result of peripheral nerve damage, particularly in the lower legs and feet. Close control of blood glucose levels has been found to be the best means of preventing this diabetic neuropathy, and although research suggests intravenous supplementation to be the most effective, both oral and intravenous supplements of lipoic acid are approved as treatments in Germany.

It has been suggested that lipoic acid's role in improving circulation and the general health of the vascular system may be responsible for its mitigation of the effects of diabetic neuropathy, but orthodox opinion is that more long term studies are required to establish this link. Supplementation in the case of diabetics should in any case only be undertaken under medical supervision.

But the possible benefits of lipoic acid don't end here. Lipoic acid is a valuable tonic for the liver, assisting its regeneration and recovery from hepatitis and toxic assaults such as drug, alcohol or fungal poisoning. A number of animal experiments have also appeared to show that supplements may restrict the activity of an enzyme associated with the progression of multiple sclerosis. As always, however, in the cautious world of orthodox medicine, it is argued that more long-term studies are needed before any definitive statements are made.

Likewise, although there have been some encouraging indications that lipoic acid may have a positive effect in slowing down memory loss, age-related cognitive decline and dementias, including Alzheimer's disease, larger long-term trials are needed before any definitive statements can be expected from the scientific community.

As always with supplementation, however, it is a question of weighing large potential benefits against the risks. As indicated above, lipoic acid is approved as a medical treatment in Germany and is freely available as a food supplement in the US and elsewhere. The few adverse reactions to oral supplements which have been recorded have been confined to relatively minor skin irritations and gastric upsets.

Moreover, good food sources are limited to the unpopular offal and dark green leafy vegetables, and even the best of these will provide only a tiny fraction of the bio-available lipoic acid that can be obtained from supplements. Indeed, because of the difficulty in absorbing lipoic acid in the presence of food, this is one of the very few cases where it's recommended that supplements should be taken on an empty stomach

It needs to be stressed again, however, that because of its potential effects on blood sugar regulation diabetics should not embark on a course of supplements without first seeking medical advice.

Glutathione- The Master Antioxidant

Glutathione is a master antioxidant, which is required by our body to function properly and to stay healthy. Glutathione, a small molecule made up of three amino acids including - glycine, glutamate and cysteine - works as your cellular Super-Mop, absorbing "free-radicals", safeguarding your cellular membranes and internal organs from the cascading damage they can cause. Deficiency of glutathione can drastically affect nervous system. Lack in production of glutathione can also lead to body imbalance and tremors. Internal damage may become systemic, affecting each individual differently. Moreover, with the increasing age, the production of GSH deteriorates naturally. If GSH production is less in early age, then the decline rate is much larger in old age. Glutathione also works to help boost mental functions, enhances energy levels, increases concentration, promotes increased levels of exercise, improves chronic pain problems, lowers blood pressure, improves heart and lung functions, and helps control the effects of diabetes. Glutathione aids in liver support by eradicating environmental poisons thus aiding the liver to function as the main production site and warehouse for Glutathione. Our GSH level actually symbolizes our state of health and can presume endurance. Increasing age and other factors lessens the body's production and consumption of GSH. Research has revealed that people with lower Glutathione levels are more prone to chronic diseases. Glutathione provides the appropriate nutrients required to promote the body's own competence to produce and consume Glutathione. There are several Glutathione supplements available in the market but they all are useless. Although there are thousands published papers on the advantages of Glutathione supplementation, it is still largely not accepted by mainstream medicine. Unfortunately, supplements containing Glutathione alone will not increase the body's GSH Levels. It is useless to purchase supplements that merely contain Glutathione, because the digestive system breaks down ingested Glutathione and it will not be absorbed into your system. Max Gxl, the nutritional product developed by world- famous immunologist Dr. Robert Keller, provides the essential components of glutathione (GSH) that, when sop up by the body, stimulate the body's own production of glutathione to be used by every cell. Glutathione is the most acceptec, natural, vigorous and multifunctional antioxidant in the human body and is employed by every organ.

Acne and the Actimine Cure for Acne - Explained

Acne spoils the beauty of your face and predominantly affects people ranging from twelve to eighteen. At times, other people experiencing facial breakdown complain of acne affecting their skin. Facial acne needs attention and in some cases may call for a physician consultation. Actimine is an herbal supplement formulated to help with its removal, helping prevent acne by reducing the oily buildup present in the skin.

Actimine also helps stop the growth of whiteheads and blackheads. Acne results from the involvement of complex hormones, immunity process, and enzymes. Actimine balances body functions by correcting nutritional deficiencies. Older people ranging from their 20s to 40s can also be benefited by Actimine.

Explanation of acne

This term is used by dermatologists who define acne as an oily buildup causing pimples and deep lumps. It occurs on the face, neck, back, shoulders or chest and can range from harsh to mild. The worst part of having acne is that it has a tendency to leave long-lasting scar spots.

Causes of acne

Acne is caused by hormonal fluctuations and genetic problems. There are also other reasons for the cause of acne ranging from stress, excessive washing of the face, imbalanced diet, and heavy cosmetics usage. When acne problem becomes chronic, medical treatment may be necessary. For acute cases, however, you can choose to have Actimine, which can help both in clearing your face of unwanted acne and keeping it under long term control without having bad side effects.

Who is affected by acne?

Acne problems can occur in anyone irregardless of sex, race, and ethnicity. It starts in adolescence between the ages of twelve and eighteen and generally lasts untill adulthood. Men are more prone to severe acne problems, and may require medical aid in some instances to treat it. Even women, however, have acne problems which can be partly due to cosmetics that are highly oil-based and the hormonal swings associated with menstruation. Additionally, some people having a family history of acne, may be affected by a heredity predisposition to acne.

One of the chief problems of people having acne occurs when they overlook the problem, failing to address the initial and mild symptoms. Failing to address acne while it's mild may cause substantial and severe skin problems requring the consultation of a doctor. Many research studies have been done on acne and many more studies are currently underway. Actimine is a blend of different ingredients that mainly aim to help with curing acne problems from the very beginning of onset, while promoting a skin health that can help keep acne at bay.

Benefits of Actimine

Actimine helps the human body develop vitamin A, which is known to reduce the production in sebum and help building up keratin. Actimine also provides selenium, an antioxidant, which is known for helping the body in formation of enzyme glutathione peroxidases. GtP enzymes helps regulate and control the the occurrence of inflammation within the human body. Actimine also includes zinc, Gum Guggul, and methysulfonyl methane, which have been indicated as beneficial in the fight against acne.

Organic Foods and Supplements

Organic food and produce have become so popular, that organic farms are having a difficult time keeping up with the demand. Organic, cage free, fertile eggs are much higher in nutritional value than regular commercial eggs.

Organic foods are better because they have no chemicals, preservatives, or any potentially harmful ingredients. In addition, emerging information about the high nutritional content of grass-fed meat and milk products is raising consumer awareness about the benefits of grass farming.

Nobel Prize winning bio-chemist, Linus Pauling put his finger on the problem when he said "Every disease has a nutritional cause. What we need is "Pasture Perfect Food" where animals are born and raised naturally, they roam free range pasture and have never been confined in a feedlot. Use of artificial growth hormones, preservatives or additives are banned and there is no routine use of antibiotics.

We should eat beef, lamb, chicken, turkey and fish, the things that God intended. The notion of eating foods that have beneficial effects on consumer health above those of adequate nutrition is one that sits well.

Raw food and organic supplements are two of nature's keys to health. Organic supplements have little or no side effects. They are made from the best of what nature has to offer, and are both powerful and earth-friendly. Organic supplements are not common and are expensive, but they do make a difference in our diet.

Organic supplements are much better for you than conventional supplements, and are a great way to complete your diet. Contrary to prescription tablets, organic supplements have no adverse effects and can be obtained without a prescription or expensive doctor's office visit. Eating organic and properly supplementing your diet will ensure a firm foundation for health, and your diet will not lack anything essential. Most all foods today are produced on commercial soils deficient in essential nutrients, or from animals that provide only toxic inorganic sources of nutrients.

Alternative health care supplements have several advantages over traditional pharmaceutic drugs. Supplements are essential in therapeutic all-natural health care programs, but it is a prerequisite that we choose the proper type.

Beware of any health care professional who recommends synthetic supplements. Synthetic supplements benefit the company that produces them; not your health.

Supplements are usually categorized as either natural (organic) or synthetic (inorganic). Since the condition of our body, and the degree of our health reflects the quality of the foods we eat, whole food supplements can do many things for you, such as:

* Boost your energy level * Revitalize your body's natural defense system * Increase your powers of memory and concentration.

Alternative supplements come in different forms, such tablets, capsules, gel caps, syrups, and drinkable liquids. Most people prefer solid supplements because they do not like the taste of herbs, but liquid supplements are generally more efficient.

Common sense should tell us we don't need synthetic (inorganic) supplements any more than we need synthetic food for breakfast. Most synthetic supplements are found in drug stores, pharmacies, department stores, and mail order catalogs.

Natural (organic) supplements are usually found with all-natural health care professionals, health food stores, and some mail order companies. Purchase your supplements from people who know the difference between natural and synthetic.

Organic Gardening

Organic gardening is the practice of producing crops by avoiding the use of synthetic chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, and growth regulators. Science is constantly discovering in the foods that we eat, new, beneficial substances that enhance wellness, especially if the foods are unprocessed and organic.

Organics For the Skin?

Organics have even made their way into skin-care and cosmetics. Organics keep skin more hydrated, supply more pure ingredients necessary to skin renewal, and give our skin a rest from having to filter out toxins and harmful ingredients. Most people who switch to an organic diet report a glow in their skin and their eyes, a smoother complexion, and fewer skin problems like allergies and break-outs.

The healthy option and the solution to avoiding toxin exposure from your cosmetics and skin care products is to adopt a certified organics approach. Long time exposure to chemicals that are absorbed into your skin can contribute to many health problems.

Buying and Eating Organic

Since organics have gained momentum in popularity, most grocers have devoted specific sections to organic products and carry organic the organic version of some fruits and vegetables.

No longer solely the domain of the granola set, organic food and personal care products have left the food co-op and hit the mainstream. Today, nearly all grocery stores boast organic food sections and consumers are taking notice. If you're new to organics and just want to get your feet wet, so to speak, it's a great time to start gradually overhauling your kitchen cupboards.

There's an organic replacement for almost everything in your cupboard. Many people think that going organic is more expensive, and while you may spend a little more at first, as organics have paved more of their way onto the scene, prices have consistently dropped. An organic diet gives your body the proper nourishment it needs without all the harmful and potentially dangerous additives.

Health

Everyone knows by now that fast-food is the opposite of health food, but many still think that if it shows up in our local super market it is made with ingredients that are harmless to our health.

Almost all foods in the grocery stores today, unless they are specifically certified as organic, come from the big conglomerate owned farms. The routinely use artificial, or inorganic fertilizers. These fertilizers are chemically produced, sometimes from petroleum products. The bottom line for the majority of commercial food companies is profit, not healthy foods for you and your children. Our health pays a high price for this, because each one of these chemicals comes with adverse side effects.

We can only solve this problem when we make life-affirming choices in eating organic nutritious food, drinking plenty of clean pure water, detoxifying and cleansing, exercising, breathing healthy air, and living in harmony with nature.

Minerals

Why All the Fuss About Calcium?

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body, vital to the formation of strong bones and teeth and for the maintenance of healthy gums. Magnesium is an essential mineral that must be present in a calcium formula for the body to properly absorb the calcium. Calcium must be from a food source or an organic fossilized source with the proper vitamins and minerals necessary to digest, absorb, assimilate and utilize the calcium.

Bio-availability is an important property since the value of the mineral is wasted if it is not taken up and absorbed by the body. The bio-availability, or amount actually absorbed by the body, of minerals in supplements has been a long-standing concern, and forms of the minerals that are shown through testing to be more bio-available are highly valued by consumers.

Calcium from Other Food Sources

Asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, collards, dandelion greens, turnip greens, kale, and actually any leafy greens are vegetables high in calcium.

Selenium is an essential trace mineral and is present in all the tissues of the body as an activating component of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which has been shown to protect cells from free radical damage.

Of all the nutrient allowances, the allowance for iron is the most difficult to obtain from dietary sources, which is why iron is the most common single mineral deficiency in the world. Zinc is an essential trace mineral that is required in relatively high doses and it is among the best selling individual trace minerals in the health food industry.

Despite the essential nature of zinc, the human body does not store this mineral, so the body is dependent upon a continual external supply. Manganese does not have an RDA, but is included in a number of mineral supplement products.

Vegetables

Of the 8,854 ads reviewed in a study, there were none for fruits or vegetables targeting children or teens. Fiber, an essential for good health, can be found in raw vegetables, fresh fruits, whole wheat bread (not bleached or enriched) and unprocessed grains. Fiber can easily be added by increasing your intake of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. To increase the amount of fiber in your diet, add more servings of fruit, vegetables, and whole grains to your daily diet.

Vitamins

Our body thrives on naturally occurring, whole, complex, real vitamins from foods, because vitamins in this form are more "potent" per milligram than synthetic laboratory fractions of vitamins.

Cleansing

If you're looking for an effective way to flush out toxins from your digestive system, relieve constipation and other lower intestinal problems, improve digestive function, increase your energy, lose weight, and just generally improve overall health, you should consider using a high-quality, organic colon cleanser.

Over time, as these toxins build up, we can gain weight, become chronically constipated, feel sluggish or lethargic, and experience yeast overgrowth, known as Candida. Common side effects associated with bad colon cleansers include:

* Nausea * Vomiting * Increased appetite * Weight gain * Bloating * Distention * Decreased frequency of bowel movements.

The back up of waste in your body can actually cause constipation weight gain even if you are eating less. Compaction can be caused by a number of conditions including:

* Failure to consume enough fiber * Failure to drink enough fluids * Use of pain relieving medication, antidepressants, anti-diarrhea medication, or antacids containing aluminum * Use of methadone typically used to treat drug addiction * Use of medications interfering with nerve and muscle function * Excessive use of laxatives * Undergoing extended bed rest * Kidney disease * Hemorrhoids * Heart disease * Cancer * Conditions limiting movement, such as cerebral palsy or dementia

Organic supplements are another option available for treating fecal compaction. You see, your colon can become quite clogged from years of eating bad foods (fatty meats, sweets, starchy side dishes, etc. But, the backed up waste will actually cause you to put on the pounds rather than lose them, even if you are eating less.

Cancer and Other Common Diseases

Cancer, obesity, allergies, asthma, arthritis, diabetes, alzheimers and heart disease are all symptoms of the 20th century diet. Higher intakes of selenium are needed to help fight heart disease and cancer, and some people, including those with chronic gastrointestinal disorders such as Crohns disease and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), have trouble absorbing this mineral.

Many scientists agree at least 80% of the 200 different types of cancer known today are related to toxins and carcinogens from toxic and synthetic chemicals. A UK study discovered in breast cancer tumors traces of methyl parabens, which is a synthetic chemical commonly used in washes, anti-perspirants, deodorants, body creams, and lotions. Glutathione is the body's master antioxidant which helps fight off diseases such as cancer, aids, Gulf War Syndrome, fatigue, arthritis.

New research shows vitamin D slashes risk of cancers by 77 percent; cancer industry refuses to support cancer prevention.

Our bodies need natural (organic) supplements as opposed to synthetic (inorganic). Do not be mislead in believing synthetic (inorganic) supplements, with the addition of animal glands and organs, can help correct your health problems.

Organic foods and organic supplements are as close as you can get to what God had in mind. Organic supplements are used by hundreds of health practitioners, clinics and individuals throughout the world.

Don't Overlook The Familiar When It Comes To Anti-Oxidants

Riboflavin, also known as vitamin B2, is an important member of the water soluble B complex of vitamins and has of course been well known as an essential nutrient for many years, hence its popularity as a fortifying agent in commercially produced breakfast cereals and breads etc. But in the current craze for tracking down new anti-oxidant "superfoods" it's easy to overlook the more familiar, but nonetheless vital, nutrients such as the B complex vitamins.

Riboflavin, for example, is essential for the body's production of certain enzymes, known as flavocoenzymes, which are needed for the production of energy through the metabolism of the proteins, fats and carbohydrates consumed in the diet. Flavocoenzymes are important in the breaking down and the using or neutralising of chemicals, including drugs and toxins within the body, and it has also been noted that they are a precursor of the specialised proteins needed for the proper functioning of the brain cell mitochondria.

Impaired oxygen metabolism within these mitochondria has been identified as a possible cause of migraine headaches, Although tested on only a small sample of patients, supplementation with high levels (400 mg) of riboflavin has been duly found to have significant effects in reducing the frequency of migraine attacks when continued over a three month period. Despite the limited scope of the research so far, orthodox medicine regards riboflavin as worthy of further investigation for use in conjunction with conventional drug therapies.

Riboflavin is also important as an anti-oxidant in enabling the proper functioning of glutathione, the crucial anti-oxidant enzyme. Glutathione is needed to neutralise the hydrogen peroxide which is released as a by-product of normal metabolic reactions within the body. Left unchecked hydrogen peroxide can interact with other free radicals to produce hydroxyl, the most damaging of all. Glutathione is particularly important in protecting the delicate fatty structures, eg the membranes, of every cell in the body.

Although anti-oxidants are required to protect every cell in the body, particular attention has been focussed on their role in the lens of the eye, where light induced oxidative damage has been found to be a risk factor for the development of cataracts, one of the most significant causes of vision loss in the elderly.

Measuring by reference to glutathione activity, research has suggested that individuals in the highest quintile of riboflavin levels may have only around half the risk of developing cataracts as those in the lowest quintile.

In addition to facilitating the action of the fat soluble glutathione, riboflavin is also essential for the body's manufacture of another enzyme, xanthine oxidase, which is needed for the formation of uric acid, one of the most powerful water soluble anti-oxidants.

In common with all the vitamins of the B complex, a deficiency in riboflavin is likely to be associated with, and to cause, a deficiency in each of the others. Deficiency in riboflavin, however, has also been particularly associated with problems in the absorption of iron, and consequent anaemia and lowered immune system function.

The US Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for riboflavin is set at the very low sounding levels of 1.3 mg per day for men, and 1.1 mg for women, In Europe the slightly higher figure of 1.6 mg is suggested. To put these in perspective, a cup of fortified cereal may provide between 0.6 and 2.3 mg; 8 oz milk perhaps 0.35 mg, and a single large egg 0.3 mg. Meat, fish, chicken and green vegetables also provide a certain amount.

So these food values would seem to suggest that the RDAs should be easily achievable by those eating a normally balanced diet - and indeed they should. The problem is that the RDAs are set at levels designed to ensure protection against outright deficiency disease, which is not at all the same as optimal health. There is also good evidence that few of us in any case, in fact succeed in eating such a diet, and this can be a particular problem for older adults. Some research suggests that as many as a quarter of over 65s fail to achieve their RDA of riboflavin though their normal daily diet, and of course that which they do take in tends to be less well absorbed than that consumed by younger people. The result is that as many as 10% of the over 65s show signs of severe deficiency, an alarming and unforgivable statistic in wealthy Western societies.

But such symptoms of deficiency may not be confined to the elderly. Younger adults who achieve only these minimal levels of riboflavin intake may also be at risk if subjecting their bodies to unusual stresses, amongst which must be included physical work, intensive athletic or sporting activity, and the use of alcohol, tobacco or other drugs.

There are no known toxicity issues with any quantity of the B complex vitamins conceivably likely to be consumed, and the Food and Nutrition Board has specified no upper safe limit. The vitamins are water soluble with any excess being easily excreted by the body. So given the difficulties of absorption which become more pronounced as the body ages, and the increased requirements for these vitamins which seems to arise with the increasingly stressful lives we lead in the 21st century - not to mention the nutritional poverty of much of the heavily refined and processed foods we now routinely consume, there seems no reason not to supplement with riboflavin and the other vitamins of the B complex.

How To Detox with a Natural Detox Diet

These top ten detox foods can help provide some great ideas on how to detox your body - they provide some of the best all round nutrients for a total body detox, and can easily be incorporated into a free detox diet plan. You can include them in part of a raw food detox diet, or juice them for some great tasting detox drinks.

When buying fruit and vegetables, organic produce is always better for you that non organic if your budget can stretch that far. If not, non organic will be OK, as these foods can be used for a very healthy 7 day detox program and as part of your ongoing detoxification regime.

1. The Power of Apples

Did you know that scientists in the Ukraine used apples to help clean and purify the area of Chernobyl when they had that catastrophic disaster back in 1986? That says something about the detox power of apples. Their power comes from high levels of vitamin C and quercetin, which is an antioxidant that helps reduce levels of bad cholesterol.

They also contain pectin - a fiber that is also found in citrus fruits, beets and berries. Pectin binds to heavy metals (like lead and mercury) in the colon and helps eliminate them from your body. It also helps your body excrete food additives and toxins, including tartrazine, which has been linked to conditions such as hyperactivity, migraine and asthma, particularly in children.

2. Avocados - My Favorite

Apart from anything else I think avos taste great - the fact that they are good for you is even better. Avocados contain a nutrient called gluthathione, which is a powerful antioxidant. It combines with fat soluble toxins, particularly alcohol, and makes them water soluble.

The natural levels of gluthathione in our bodies decrease as we get older, which is one reason why hangovers get worse as we age. Studies of "older people" have shown that those who had higher levels of glutathione were healthier than those with lower levels. The higher level group were also less likely to suffer from arthritis, which many experts believe is a condition aggravated by excess toxicity in our bodies.

3. A Liver Detox with Artichokes

Artichokes are known to increase bile production. One of the roles of bile is to transport toxins to the bowel where they can be excreted. Recent studies have shown that eating artichokes can increase bile production by up to 127% (100% is the same as doubling) within 30 minutes of eating it.

Artichokes are also full of antioxidant nutrients, and play an important role in liver detox. Studies in Germany have shown that liver damage, caused by free radicals, is dramatically reduced when artichoke extracts are present within the body.

4. Beetroot

Beetroot is another fat-free vegetable, with very low calorific content and very high fiber content. Throughout Europe, beetroot is seen as a powerful anti-carcinogen, and can help increase the amount of oxygen our bodies can absorb by up to 400%.

The use of beetroot for health benefits dates back several thousand years - it was used in ancient Rome as a blood purifying tonic for a total body detox. It also has some chelation properties by binding with heavy metals.

5. Cruciferous Vegetables

Cruciferous Vegetables are a powerful group of plants that offer powerful cancer fighting benefits. Many studies have shown that these vegetables contain a phytochemical compound called isothiocyanates. Isothiocyanates encourage our bodies to attack and destroy many carcinogenic compounds. They do this by preventing normal healthy cells from transforming into cancerous cells.

These vegetables contain a nutrient called glucosinolates, which help the liver to produce vital enzymes.

Asthma - What Your Doctor Doesn't Want You to Know About Asthma

Bronchial Asthma or Exertional Asthma or Hayfever or Allergies

My brother uses to suffer from Asthma and I can still remember the horrifying trips to hospital, the wheezing, the gasping, and the helplessness I felt as I watched him struggle to get the first basic necessity of life into his body - oxygen. The fact that there seemed to be no solution to this problem was probably the worst thing of all.

We live in a society that focuses on dealing with an issue after it has arisen rather than preventing it in the first place. There are many effective drugs that doctors prescribe for asthma, some need to be taken every day, some only when it flares up. However they do not fix the problem and offer no solution - just treatment - time and time again.

Many, many people in our high tech society suffer from this nasty disease without knowing why they are afflicted with it, or find any real answer. The drugs asthmatics take are strong anti-inflammatories and/or relax the throat and open the passageways without addressing the real issue. They just want you to buy more, and take it again next time it flares up!!

Very basically. the mucus covering the little brushes inside the area running from your nose to the top of your lungs filters out poisonous pro-oxidants (bad stuff) by neutralising them with anti-oxidants like Vitamin C, E and (you'll all know this one) glutathione. These anti-oxidants work together to attack the enemy and protect the lungs so they can get on with the real job of helping you breathe (kind of important). If the attack on the mucus is beaten off all well and good, however if it is NOT, then this can lead to bad inflammation of the lung tissue underneath and damange the lung in its actual fuction. This in turn leads to a lack of energy, tiredness and an adult or child (you all know one) who always seems to be getting sick with the latest cough, cold or flu. This is because their immune system is running below that of the average person.

Clinical trials have found that patients with asthma have very low levels of Vitamin C, E and beta-carotene in their nasal mucus even when they were NOT having a strong attack. Also they had very high levels of the the by-products that are made by the oxidative stress that leads to inflammation and overworking of the the lungs.

The true answer lies in building the long-suffering asthmatics struggling defense system which is already in place, to a level that is described by the word optimum rather than inadequate. A defense system which does the job that it is meant to do rather than crumbling under each attack because it does not have the right ammunition to fight it.

A adult or child with a weak immune system can boost it with a high quality multi-vitamin combined with strong anti-oxidant protection. Additional doses of vitamin C will boost the immune system further as it is the most effective out of the anti-oxidants fighting inflammation in the nasal passages.

Latest News on Heart Health

New discoveries are made every day. The field of heart research is no different. It can be difficult to follow what scientists discovered recently. Here we summarized the latest news on heart health.

1. People who survived heart attack are at risk for diabetes or prediabetes, according to Harvard researchers. A study of 8,300 Italians who had survived a heart attack revealed that after 3.5 years, almost two-thirds of them or 62% developed diabetes or prediabetes.

2. HDL, also called the "good" cholesterol, might have a bad side, according to researcher from the University of Washington in Seattle. They found that defective forms of HDL can increase the risk of a heart attack. However, overall the substance is beneficial.

3. First, scientists told us that high levels of vitamin E are no so good at preventing a heart attack. Late, researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center said that failure of vitamin E to prevent heart attacks is because of underdosing.

4. The World Health Organisation announced a report suggesting that people can die from heart disease caused by prolonged exposure to excessive noise. British doctors discovered that 3 percent of fatal heart attacks and strokes were linked to noise pollution. Researchers at the University College London claim that levels exceeding 75 decibels can raise blood pressure to a large extent.

5. A new animal study showed that excessive exercise can worsen high blood pressure and progression to heart failure. The implications for humans are not yet clear, but the results warn against the potential damage too much exercise can do to persons with untreated high blood pressure.

6. Plant compounds - sterols and stanols - are very good at protecting human heart. They are found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and oils. If you adding 2g of either to your every day diet you can lower risk of heart disease by 20 percent within 14 days.

7. Some people with high blood pressure develop heart failure, while others don't. Scientists at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis discovered that a lack of a protein called estrogen-related receptor alpha is responsible for this incident.

8. Antioxidants are playing an important role in the defense against heart disease. But, too much of reduced glutathione can contribute to the disease, according to University of Utah researchers. They showed that an overload of this antioxidant can cause heart failure.

9. A recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition revealed that consuming two to three daily cups of caffeinated drinks, including coffee, can reduce your risk of dying from heart disease by 31 percent.

10. Too much salt in your diet can lead to high blood pressure and increased risk of heart attack or stroke. The average American consumes 4,000 to 6,000 milligrams of salt each day. The American medical institutions recommend a limit of 1,500 mg to 2,400 mg a day.

Acetyl-l-carnitine, The Next Anti-aging Brain Nutrient

Acetyl-L-Carnitine is an amino acid derivative instrumental in the biochemical synthesis of acetycholine, an important neurotransmitter without which you would be unable to learn or to memorize anything. However, it has another property: it may be able to provide sufficient nutrition to the brain as to allow it to withstand the ravages of time and aging.

Since time immemorial mankind has sought the elixir of life that can be used to give humans everlasting life. While this has yet to be found there is increasing evidence that research is slowly but steadily identifying the factors that cause aging, and identifying means of overcoming them. Acetyl-L-carnatine is one of those amino acid supplements that is essential to life, and that when combined with other supplements can produce a synergistic effect that shows signs of combating at least some of the oxidative changes in the body that cause aging.

Anti-oxidants such as Vitamins C and E have long been used in attempts to fight against the oxidative effects of free radicals on the body; free radicals that once were the by products of our metabolism and easily combated, but which are now being increasingly generated in our environment through pollution, radiation, excessive exposure to sunlight and cigarette smoke. All of these contribute to aging through the disruption and destruction of body cells by these free radicals.

Acetylcholine is well known to biochemical historians, being one of the first neurotransmitters discovered, and its importance in maintaining the proper operation of the brain is indisputable. It is an essential part of the process that allows brain cells to communicate and to create memory. Not only that, but also to recall memories and to tell muscles when they should and should not contract. As people age their brain cells become less efficient, this mainly being due to a decline in the acetyl-L-carnitine that produces actylcholine in the body with the aid of the enzyme choline acetyl transferase.

To express it simply, acetyl-l-carnitine enables neurons to maintain communication when the levels of enzymes and other necessary chemicals are falling throughout the body due to the slowing of the body with age. If we cannot produce it ourselves, then we can either supply it directly though a supplement, or supply its precursor so that the body has the raw materials to produce it.

Most biochemistry is active throughout our lives: we simply need to provide the raw materials for the necessary reactions to take place. We can do that through supplements. It has been established that a supplement of acetyl-L-carnitine slows the natural mental decline that begins to occur in middle age and to improved memory and concentration. It is extremely useful that it is easily soluble in both water and fats, so that it can be carried to any part of the body that requires an antioxidant effect.

Studies have also indicated that supplemental acetyl-L-carnitine can promote improved energy generation through its effect on fatty acids. This support of the metabolism of fatty acids is indicated by its effect on 'liver spots', which are a recognized sign of aging. These brown spots can be seen on the skin as people age, but the lipofuscin that causes it also affects the internal organs and the brain, and can also appear on the lens of the eye. Lipofuscin is composed of waste products such as damaged proteins and oxidized fats and other lipids. Its production can be held back by antioxidants, and are reduced by supplemental acetyl-L-carnitine.

This is yet another incidence of how ALC can be used to slow done or even reverse, the effects of aging on the human metabolism and brain functions. Animal studies have indicated that this effect is significantly greater when it is used in conjunction with lipoic acid.

Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is a powerful antioxidant, occurring naturally in beef, kidney, and green vegetables such as spinach and broccoli. It is also a coenzyme, working with with other metabolic enzymes to produce energy. Moreover, ALA raises the levels of a substance called glutathione which is critical for the proper functioning of the neurons. However, it is their effect on mitichondria that makes a combination of ALA and ALC so interesting in human biology.

Mitochondria are responsible for the generation of power in all cells in the human body through the biosynthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) responsible for all metabolic functions and cell generation. Without mitochondria, oxygen cannot be used. ATP is the substance that is responsible for carrying chemical energy in the body. During aging, mitochondria are damaged by oxidation through free radicals. This induced a general decline in energy and cognitive functions.

However it was found in a study with rats that when acetyl-L-carnitine was provided as a supplement, the age-related decline in mitochondrial activity was reversed and oxidation of fatty acids was increased. As a result of this fatty acid oxidation, even more oxidation damage to the mitochondria occurred. When a supplement of alpha lipoic acid was also given, however, the mitochondrial oxidation was reduced, so that the mitochondria produced a higher energy output with less oxidation damage.

In fact the two worked synergistically, the benefit of acetyl-L-Carnitine and alpha lipoic acid used together being more effective than when given separately. It is possibly the discovery of more such synergistic effects that will eventually lead to longer life spans!

After a period of time, the old rats took on the energy of much younger rats, and the aging process appeared to have reversed. Tests are now under way on humans, and while the doses needed are large, initial results of a 2001 study at San Francisco State University have indicated a reduction in the oxidative stress induced by exercise of a test group in comparison with a placebo control group.

This type of stress as in indication of damage caused by energy output, and relates to aging. It appears, therefore, that a supplement consisting of both acetyl-L- carnitine and alpha lipoic acid is more effective that either alone in improving the degeneration of energy levels as well the decline in cognitive and memory functions that comes with age. It is not yet, however, the elixir of life!

7 Nutrients Your Eyes Need For Optimum Visual Performance

"Finish your carrots, they're good for eyes" you may have heard your mother say a time or two. Carrots contain Vitamin A which plays an important role in optimum vision health. But there are quite a few nutrients that may be even more important then Vitamin A in supporting a clear and healthy visual system.

Here we highlight 7 vitamins, minerals, and herbal supplements and the research that supports their role in protecting and improving your eyesight.

Chromium

Dr. Benjamin C. Lane, O.D., from the Nutritional Optometry Institute in New Jersey, says, "Americans are getting less chromium and much more of its major antagonist, vanadium (a trace element) because of recent dietary trends to large marine fish and poultry."

In numerous tissue testing and diet assessment studies that Dr. Lane has performed over the past twenty years he has found that "low levels of chromium are a major risk factor for increased intraocular pressure." Chromium plays a large role in muscle contraction which is why this occurs when deficiencies are present.

And yet another negative effect of near-point activities like computer use, Dr. Lane reports that "the set of muscles we use more than ever before, are those that help focus our eyes." He has conducted several studies that have shown that straining to focus over a period of time, does in fact increase intraocular pressure. But with proper amounts of chromium in your diet, focusing may be easier and less stressful to your eyes.

The body does not make chromium naturally, so it must be obtained through your diet. The best sources of chromium are beef, liver, eggs, chicken, oysters, wheat germ, green peppers, apples, bananas, and spinach.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C's importance as an antioxidant cannot be overstated. The Web site All About Vision even calls this vitamin the "Vision Superhero"!

Vitamin C has been linked to the prevention of cataracts - one study has shown that taking 300 to 600 mg supplemental vitamin C reduced cataract risk by 70 percent - the delay of macular degeneration, and eye pressure reduction in glaucoma patients.

It's an interesting fact that, while most animals produce their own vitamin C, we humans do not have that ability. In addition, we can't store this vitamin in our bodies for very long, so it needs to be constantly replenished to obtain its benefits.

Most of us think of orange juice as the quintessential source of vitamin C, but many vegetables are actually even richer sources: chili peppers, sweet peppers, kale, parsley, collard, and turnip greens are full of vitamin C, as are broccoli, Brussels sprouts, watercress, cauliflower, cabbage, and strawberries.

Lutein and Zeaxanthin

Lutein, found in our retinas, is essential for healthy vision. Lutein and a related dietary carotenoid, zeaxanthin, accumulate within the retina and imbue a yellow pigment that helps protect the eye.

It lowers the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration (low lutein intake is implicated as a risk factor in age-related macular degeneration), and may also help to prevent or slow down atherosclerosis.

Lutein is found in the red, orange, and yellow pigments of fruits and vegetables; for example, tomatoes, carrots, and squash. Green leafy vegetables such as spinach also contain high amounts of lutein.

Clinical research has determined that lutein along with zeaxanthin are two naturally occurring carotenoids present in the macular segment of the retina.

The concentration of these two is so high in the macula (the retinal region responsible for fine visual activities), that the carotenoids are visible as a dark yellow spot, called the macular pigment, in normal, healthy retinas. They act like sunglass filters to protect the eye.

Research performed at Harvard Medical School has established that dietary zeaxanthin plays an essential role in protecting the retina of the eye from the damaging effects of light.

Epidemiologic studies have shown that people with higher lutein/zeaxanthin levels have reduced risk for advanced stages of macular degeneration.

Blue-eyed individuals need more lutein and zeaxanthin because they have less of these protective pigments in their retinas. Again, dark, leafy greens are the dietary winner here, along with corn, nectarines, oranges, papaya and squash.

Zinc

Our eyes actually contain the greatest concentration of zinc in our body. Just like you need a bulb to convert electricity into light, your body needs zinc to convert beta-carotene into vitamin A.

Oysters contain more zinc per serving than any other food, but red meat and poultry provide the majority of zinc in the American diet.

Selenium

Selenium is a trace mineral that our bodies need to boost immunity and fight off infections. It can also help prevent cataracts and macular degeneration by acting as an antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals that can damage the eye's lens and macula; studies have identified low selenium levels in cataract sufferers.

Selenium also helps your body to absorb vitamin E. Fish, shellfish, red meat, grains, eggs, chicken, liver, and garlic are all good sources of selenium, as well as brewer's yeast and wheat germ.

Glutathione

Glutathione is an amino acid that protects the tissues surrounding the lens of the eyes. According to Web MD, "It also has potentially widespread health benefits because it can be found in all types of cells, including the cells of the immune system, whose job is to fight disease."

Numerous studies link glutathione with the prevention of cataracts, glaucoma, retinal disease, and diabetic blindness. Foods that increase glutathione levels include sulfur-rich foods such as garlic, eggs, asparagus, and onions, and glutathione-rich foods such as watermelon, asparagus, and grapefruits.

Ginkgo Biloba

The ginkgo is the oldest living tree species, growing on earth for 150-200 million years. No surprise, then, that it's one of the most well-researched herbs in the world. Studies have confirmed that ginkgo, a powerful antioxidant increases blood flow to the retina and can slow retinal deterioration which results in an increase of visual acuity.

Retinal damage has a number of potential causes, including diabetes and macular degeneration. Studies suggest that gingko may help preserve vision in those with macular degeneration.

Fight Aging with Vitamins

Researchers in search for the fountain of youth keep coming back to one fact: you are what you eat. What you eat has a tremendous impact not only on your health but also on your life span.

Aging that goes on inside your body has far more reaching consequences than a few wrinkles and gray hairs that seem to pop up over night. Sheldon Hendler, MD, Ph.D. says that much of the internal damage that accumulates over a lifetime, and the diseases that go with it, may be linked to mischievous molecules inside us called "free radicals".

Free radicals are created during the normal process of metabolism, cells produce unstable oxygen molecules that damage cells. As we get older the human body produces more and more of these free radicals.

These free radicals are molecules that have unpaired electrons that seem to attach most readily to electrons in fat molecules. A free radicals attack on the cells could kill or severely damage them, leaving them vulnerable to diseases commonly associated with the aging process.

Recent studies suggest that free radicals plays a central role in virtually every age related disease such as arteriosclerosis, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer' disease.

The brain is a good place to study the benefits of antioxidants, says Paula Bickford, Ph.D. a researcher at the University of South Florida Center of Excellent for Aging and Brain Repair. The brain has one of the highest percentages of fats of any organ in the human body, and it is in our fats that free radicals inflict much of their damage.

Since over 40 percent of the total calories in the typical American diet is derived from fat it not difficult to see how we might be exposed to extensive damaging free radical activity.

Substances called antioxidants can neutralize free radical by pairing up or binding with the free radical elections thus inhibiting them from damaging cells in the human body.

Common Vitamins and over the counter products can help with aging such as Vitamin A, Vitamin B, Vitamin E, Selenium, Beta Carotene, Lycopene, L-Glutathione, Vitamin D, Green Tea, and Antioxidant.

Vitamin C, E and some forms of Vitamin A and the mineral Selenium are known to be antioxidants that help to protect the body from these free radicals.

Vitamin A is stored in the liver and fat cells of the human body and can reach toxic levels. DO NOT take more than the recommended dosage of Vitamin A.

Up to one-third of older people can no longer absorb Vitamin B from their food. Vitamin B is needed to form red blood cells and keep nerves healthy.

The mineral Selenium has been associated with a significant reduction in the incidences of lung, colorectal and prostate cancer. Good sources are fish, asparagus, brazil nuts, meat, poultry and bread.

Beta Carotene helps protect Vitamin C from oxidation, which enables it to perform at optimum efficiency. Symptoms of Beta Carotene deficiency include ache, dry dull hair, dry skin and thickened scaly skin on the palms and soles of the feet.

Lycopene is very powerful in quenching free radicals as is L-gultathione. Ultra Antioxidant allows cells to perform more efficiently with less oxygen, enabling sufficient oxygen to be utilized for the cells and organs that specifically need it.

Vitamin D is manufactured in the skin following direct exposure to sunlight. Many studies show that Vitamin D production decreases in older people and in those who are housebound. Vitamin D is needed by the body to absorb calcium, which makes your bones stronger and helps prevent factures.

Green Tea Contains antioxidants that may protect against heart disease, several types of cancer, and skin damage.

Natural antioxidants are abundant in fruits and vegetables such as, apples, blueberries, broccoli, cherries, cranberries, grapes, spinach, and Spirulina a blue-green algae.

A 2006 article in the Journal of American Medical Association suggested that by periodically restricting our caloric intake to as little as 890 calories a day, or fasting, resulted in a decrease in insulin levels and body temperatures, another two biomarkers of longevity. Restricting calories helps to eliminate the free radicals by burning off more calories than you take in thus reducing the amount of fat stored in the human body.

Skipping a meal here and there from an evolutionary point of view would be beneficial. The human body is used to going days without eating anything but today we have constant access to food and we are taking in calories all day long.
